During the late Sixties, performance was being served up by nearly every domestic auto manufacturer. Pony cars, intermediates and full-size leviathans were all fair game for those with a heavy right foot in need of a fast cure. Stripes, hood pins and fat 15-inch, five-spoke wheels all added a go-fast vibe. The combinations therein seemed ceaseless. And then, just as it appeared it couldn’t get any better, the 1970 models were unleashed. Unknown at the time, the year became the pinnacle of Detroit’s power prowess. In one swift moment, all the rules were thrown out the proverbial window, particularly at General Motors, which finally lifted the self-imposed 400-cu.in. engine restriction for intermediate platforms. But while much of the attention was bestowed upon Chevy and Pontiac with their image-leading Chevelles and GTOs, it was Buick that may have subtly made the ultimate “supercar” statement.
Buick unveiled the Holy Grail Of Buick Muscle Cars the 1970 Buick GS. Spawned from one of General Motors’ most conservative divisions, it built a fast reputation as one of the meanest and most revered offerings of the muscle car era. Equipped with a newly developed 455-cu.in. engine, the re-badged GS 455 touted a whopping 510-lb.ft. of torque–this from a division that catered to the upright businessman and the moderately successful family alike–bolted into a car that, with the exception of discreet badging, didn’t scream “muscle” like its striped brethren. The engine has recently been fully rebuilt by a Buick specialist and had the block changed back to the correct Buick red. This is a numbers matching car which is extremely rare. It was Dyno tested after the rebuild at about 450 HP and 510 FT LB torque. It has the original drive train.
With its classic red paint job, white leather interior with console shift, white convertible top, BF Goodrich radial tires on chrome wheels and chrome accents this car will be sure to turn heads at shows or while cruising around.
